Long in the works indeed. Poisoning is also known as sorcery, which has quite a history. The principle remains the same, but the scale has vastly increased.
A portion of the modern poisoning phenomenon has a name that links it, linguistically, to the ancient poisoners. Hippocrates, in his famous oath, forbade the use of "poisons" as medicine. This part has been removed from modern versions, for obvious reasons, but then the oath is only in limited use today anyway.
The Greek text of this version reads, at one point, "οὐ δώσω δὲ οὐδὲ φάρμακον οὐδενὶ αἰτηθεὶς θανάσιμον, οὐδὲ ὑφηγήσομαι συμ βουλίην τοιήνδε: ὁμοίως δὲ οὐδὲ γυναικὶ πεσσὸν φθόριον δώσω", which can be translated (according to the website) "Neither will I administer a poison to anybody when asked to do so, nor will I suggest such a course."
The words rendered "a poison" are φάρμακον … θανάσιμον, "deadly medicine" (the elision is due to Greek word ordering). Transliterated they are "pharmakon thanasimon" -- "medicine deadly". The link to present usage is the prefix "pharma".
φάρμακον can mean a medicine or a poison. Hippocrates qualified it with θανάσιμον, "deadly" to emphasize that it was a poison used as a medicine. Some centuries later in the New Testament, Revelation 9:21, the word appears simply as φαρμάκων ( "pharmakōn", plural genitive of φάρμακον / "pharmakon"). There are five NT "pharma" references altogether, all relating to "poison".
The word at this place in Revelation can be translated as "sorceries". A better known reference, in Rev. 18.23, is "ἐν τῇ φαρμακείᾳ σου", "with your sorcery". Again, the "pharma" prefix. We should be doing all We can to strip those psychopaths presently in control of Their power to do unEthical things on a widespread scale. The tool which gives Them that power is, of course, money.
