being remembered.
Saturday I went to Home Depot to buy a replacement shovel. I wanted to make a quick exit and pay at the customer service desk close to where I parked but something invisible was tugging me to go out of my way to the main checkout.
The young man at the main checkout inquired if I found everything I needed for my project, quickly scanning my items he asked if I still went El Pollo Loco (restaurant.) Looking at him quizzically, concentrating intently to understand his broken English, he had a mild facial tic, I remembered him. He explained that he worked at El Pollo Loco before the lockdown and he never forgot his customers, never forgot me.
I asked him if he still worked at the restaurant and mentioned that I missed the self-serve salsa bar. He didn’t but liked his new job better, it was more interesting. He said the owner had promised to bring the salsa bar back but never did. We chatted for a while, he had an excellent memory for details.
These are the humble, dignified people that keep our economy humming, running smoothly. The people who know us. The people who we were so smugly lectured were non-essential.
Everyone is essential.
All jobs are essential.
He never forgot his customers, including me.
