"Only" net 6 MeV is required to transmute 201-Hg to 197-Au, via 197-Pt; far easier than transmuting lead. That was Glenn T. Seaborg's tour de force. (He actually transmuted bismuth. Thallium would seem more direct. Perhaps less PR value.) I don't know how much Bremstrahlung reduce efficiency of induced alpha emission. A calutron can isolate the 13.2% abundance 201 isotope of mercury.

DEW? Not likely. Escape of nuclear radiation from the Davy Crockett W54 warheads through holes in the buildings' superstructures seems a more plausible explanation of the fried cars.

Wow! I did not expect to be featured... LOL! Awesome that I provoked thought!!! Very good post!

I will say that the reason I accept DEWS has everything to do with the how I was taught to look at things. Dad taught Me to never believe ANYTHING. Instead, give probabilities of truth to any data I encounter, asking the question, "Does that explain what I see?"

Be willing to adjust My probabilities as new data come along that better explain what I see. And never give 100% or 0% - there's always the possibility there are data I don't have.

In this way I attach to nothing as being true (or false) and when the DEW explanation came out.. I had to give it highest probability by a wide margin. It explains what I see perfectly.
