2006 Electronic Entertainment Expo (E3) LA Convention Center, South Hall Terrazzo Floor.
Stumbled upon this masterful piece (artwork featured recently in Diana Barahona’s Substack) by elite 3D street artist Kurt Wenner whose amazing works are rendered in chalk and was intrigued to learn that he was formerly employed as a conceptual artist by NASA Jet Propulsion Laboratory with European patrons and Vatican fans including a Pope.
What fascinated me about his work “Emergence Day 2006” was its realistic, lifelike appearance. The deftness of the optical illusion. It literally looks like one could trip down that hell hole or get ankle-grabbed by a scaly claw from the depths.
Looking further into “Emergence Day 2006,” the temporary art was displayed at the May 2006 E3 trade show in promotion of the November 2006 release of a video game (by the same name) for Microsoft’s Xbox featuring a fatal parasitic respiratory disease, biowarfare, locusts, ‘accidental’ gene therapy resulting in aggressive chimeric children, fringe politics, underground labs, hivemind…
Apparently NASA employs a number of conceptual artists who busy themselves with what is considered to be an “anything goes” dream job.

Looking into the conceptual art currently on display on NASA’s official site, Disappointing would be an understatement.
Maybe they’re saving the cool stuff for September’s prime time red carpet, black tie exhibition: Artemis II, For ALL Humanity.
